When the Italian army invaded Tripoli early in the twentieth century it was not Alan Ostler's intention to write an account of the war, but rather to try his hand at " describing strange people and strange lands". However, the picture of the people he encountered is made all the more fascinating by the dramatic events of the day, which make this work, whatever the author's modest intentions, an important historical document.
