In this book--which does not set out to be a history of the proverb--no distinction has been drawn between proverb and maxim or proverb and adage because "Proverbs are like butterflies. Some you catch, others fly away." I have caught those that came into my grasp from the wealth of Libyan proverbs and set forth one hundred of them in the following pages. My aim is to introduce to non-Arab readers a representative selection and the method I have employed is first to set down the proverb in Arabic with a literal translation, followed by an explanation and an equivalent English proverb. If this book is found to be of interest or value to the reader, if it enables him the better to understand his Libyan friends and their way of life and thought then my work will have not been in vain.
